At home you have all the equipment you need to maintain your braces, as well as easy access to your dentist if you should happen to find yourself in an emergency. But when you’re on vacation, you’re not guaranteed access to these luxuries. This is why it’s important to be prepared when travelling outside of Hamilton. Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean that your oral healthcare routine is too!

Pack the essentials

When going on vacation, some people pack a cosmetics kit. Similarly, if you have braces, you should pack a care kit for your braces. In this kit you should include everything necessary to keep your braces in good condition, including:

• A toothbrush and toothpaste
• Mouthwash
• Orthodontic wax
• Toothpicks
• Floss

Your Hamilton dentist at the Eastgate Dental Centre might even be able to provide you with a pre-assembled braces hygiene kit.

Flossing and brushing
It’s always important to brush and floss, but it’s even more important when you have braces, since they give plaque and food a great place to hide. Vacations and good food tend to go hand in hand, so don’t forget to brush thoroughly after every meal!

Foods to avoid
Even though all that delicious vacation food might be tempting, there are certain edible items that you should steer clear of if you wear braces. To avoid either damaging your dental apparatus or getting food stuck in the wire, you shouldn’t eat anything hard, crunchy, chewy or sticky. While some foods, like nuts and hard candies, should be cut from your diet altogether for the time being, other foods can be modified so that they become safer for consumption. For example, cut the corn off of the cob, or slice your apple into wedges so as to avoid biting into them.
